Kew Gardens Community Day
A Big Event With A Small Town Feel

Sunday, June 10th from 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM
(Rain Date: Sunday, June 24th)

[Last revised May 6, 2007]

Nostalgic for the simple pleasures reminiscent of a small town fair? Then come join us for the Kew Gardens Improvement Association's 2nd Annual Kew Gardens Spring Into Summer Community Day on Sunday, June 10th (rain date June 24th) from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Stroll down Kew Gardens main streets, Lefferts Boulevard, Metropolitan Avenue and Austin Street, to experience a truly fun-filled day for people of all ages and interests.

Also supported by both the Kew Gardens Civic Association's and the Kew Gardens Council for Recreation and the Arts, Community Day will begin at 10:00 AM with a series of events sponsored by Commerce Bank (116-24 Metropolitan Avenue, Contact Sulay Vishnupad 718-709-3968). Dogs, bring your owners for the Pooch Parade and walk down the red carpet as you are or in costume. Prizes will be awarded for creative dog attire. Following the Pooch Parade, Carnivale of the Dogs will include paw readings, portraits, grooming, training, health tips, pet adoptions and many pooch giveaways. Commerce will provide their own rendition of the old piggy bank to kids. $10 Coupons will be offered to start off newly opened accounts with your counted change. Commerce Bank and NYC Department of Parks & Recreation will offer an afternoon of children's activities.

Check out Cinemas Park, around the corner from the Kew Gardens Cinemas, on Austin Street. Starting at 11:00 AM munch on homemade popcorn, cotton candy, or sip lemonade prepared by local Girl Scout Troop 4296. Children can climb on a New York City Fire Truck, participate in fire safety demonstrations, and receive related gifts. Listen to a storyteller sitting on a magical butterfly chair. Try the crafts projects, face painting, and the Urban Park Rangers Nature Table. What would a Community Day be without live entertainment? From 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, enjoy the talents of local singers, musicians and dancers. The park will also be the site of a very special Silent Auction (take a chance and buy a ticket to win!).

Across the street at the LIRR North Parking Lot, the fun continues at the Kew Gardens Spring Art & Crafts Show where you can meet and chat with local artists, admire and purchase original works of art and jewelry. More fun for kids! The American Museum of Natural History Moveable Paleontology Museum will be here from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. Plus, Animal Haven will be present for those interested in adopting a pet.

At Maple Grove Cemetery, from 11:00 AM - 3:30 PM, there will be Spirit Walks, art workshops with an I am a Friend theme (kids with parents are very welcome!), a Writing Reflection Area, and live musical entertainment.

Check out the surprise events, promotions and demonstrations provided by participating Kew Gardens merchants (wine-tasting, potter's wheel demos, or watch the neighborhood health food store ride a bicycle which makes fruit shakes)

Save the date! Kew Gardens Spring into Summer Community Day will be on June 10th. An urban village with a small town friendly feel! (For additional information, call (917) 881-3358)
