Lefferts Boulevard
It was the Homestead Building, and not the Kew Bolmer, that was the first apartment building to go up in Kew Gardens.  Just as they did in the 20th century's earliest years, apartments occupy the floors above the Homestead Building's ground level retail shops.

If you have pictures of yourself showing any Kew Gardens locale in the background, email me high resolution jpegs and I will post them here as space permits.

Just read Bill Bachmann's entry and wanted to say hi. Don't know if you remember me or not but when I was in high school back in very early seventies I worked part time in your store. I lived on Cuthbert Road so the commute was real sweet. I inhaled alot of windex cleaning those glass cases - it was the 70's so I guess that's better than what everyone else was inhaling. I loved your store and remember your parents well. Dottie & Walter. My parents Bob & Nicky Cella actually bought their wedding rings from your parents sometime in the late 40's. It was great to see you found the Kew Gardens Website - remembering the good old days and the best mom & pop shops - I was a very lucky little girl.

My parents owned Kew Gardens Jewelers on Lefferts Blvd. from 1938 until 1977. The store was located across from Homestead Deli and between Koopman's Florist and Kew Kozy. This property is now a bank. Any pictures of those stores would be fun to see. Thanks for the website.

I went to PS 90 & Russell Sage, then HS School of Art & Design.  My childhood friends were Joyce Mankarsh, Allegra Scott, Joyce Cohen, Rita Marian & Louis Fish.  Had a huge crush on Andy London ( went to school with his sister Debbie.  I can't believe that this sight exists.  I haven't lived in Kew gardens since 1965 & now live in Louisville, Kentucky.  Located Allegra through a HS Alumni page.  She didn't go to Richmond Hill or Forest Hills, either.  Who hung our on Continental Ave.,.....Cameo Bowling, etc.

My sister, Lydia Hollander, told me I couldnb't not open this website.  She was right.  What a hit of sentiment.

I was sad to learn of Fred Newmans passing.  I remember Fred's humor and energetic personality as an (almost) next door neighbor, fellow boy scout, classmate at RHHS and hebrew school.

I learned to roller skate there when I was a kid.  It later was a taxi depot for a number of years, then was renovated to become the Glendale Bake shop.  Also, in a page from local folklore, in the early 60s a women set herself on fire under south side of the LIRR train trestle across from the rink, there were flash burns going all the way up the wall to the trestle.
For you pump station afficianados there's a Jamaica Water pump station located between the trestle and Hillside on the south side of Metro.

For those of you who have mentioned the Old Roller Rink on Metro and 129th st. ( I am 27 years old , so I did not see the rink just heard about it).  Going give you an update, it became the Glendale Bake Shop till about 7 years ago.  Now there is a store there, a Window/ storm door store.  Across the Street is Flash oil company ( a few years ago the origional sign fell down in a bad storm, which had the old phone number with the letters in it.  And the Old car wash that was across MEtro is now a bigger car wash.  My favorite store to go to was Burnies ( thats what we called it ) on 124th and Metro,( opposite corner of the all Girl Jewish school) well that is no longer there

Andrew, I am really to hear about Fred's passing.  I knew Fred as well as your father from the Boy Scouts as well as from the "Park".  Please extend my condolences to your family.

I'm sad to report that my brother, Fred Newman, born in 1942, has passed away after a long illness.  Fred lived in KG for over 20 years and hung out with Steve Haken, Paul Schecter, Billy Fields, Stan Turetsky, Frank Weinstock
Fred was disappointed that he wasn't well enough to attend the reunion in KG back in November but enjoyed hearing about it from me.
Our dad, Jesse Newman, was the scoutmaster of Troop 104 for many years -- way after Fred and I got too old to be Scouts.

My name is Steven Selss, a friend of the late Bernard Titowsky, and one of his occasional employees.  I grew up in Kew Gardens Hills ( a few blocks away from the Alice Crimmins apartment) and I have been living in Cincinnati since 1993.  Bernie told me about the blood outside his book store, and always held that the Genovese story, as reported, was a pack of lies invented primarily by The New York Times.

Kew Gardens Hospital was located just off Queens Blvd. and Union Turnpike.  I was born there on November 2 19--LOL!  I could not believe it when I saw it had been torn down.  It was like an end of an era.

The home now appearing in the "What's New" section of the site (corner of Brevoort Street and Abingdon Road), was the residence of Dr. Abraham and Mrs. Sivia Rosenthal.  Dr. Rosenthal was, at one time, the County Medical Examiner for Kings County (Brooklyn).  I would love to hear from any of their "kids," Johanna (JoJo), Jesse, or David.

I remember well when Ronald Reagan came to speak when he was running for President.  He spoke in front of the Democratic Club at Lefferts Blvd. and Hillside Avenue, just across from the RH Library.  The thing that stuck out most in my mind was, besides his warmth when he spoke, was that there were men with guns on the roof of the Democratic Club and also across the street by the Library.  I think I may have a picture of him somewhere and will try to find it.

I was born in Kew Gardens Hospital in 1955.  I was amazed to see a sample Birth Certificate on this site which seems to be identical to mine, (except for the owner, of course), right down to the Superintendant's illegible signature.
