This advertisement from page 6 of the October 11, 1872 New York Times is for one of the first auctions of lots and homes in the new community of Richmond Hill. The properties were from the estate of Edward Richmond who, with Albon Man, founded Richmond Hill. Richmond had died not long before.

There is some debate as to whether Albon Man named Richmond Hill after the London suburb or after his late partner, Edward Richmond. My guess is that he named it after the London suburb. If he had wanted to honor Edward Richmond, he would have named the community Richmond instead of Richmond Hill.

Sadly, no pictures can be found to show us what Edward Richmond looked like.
