Quarry

The tombstones had to come from somewhere, and that somewhere was a quarry located on the grounds of Maple Grove Cemetery, probably just north of the present day Queens Boulevard entrance. Presumably the quarry's main source of income was supplying stone and gravel for the buildings, streets and sidewalks of the nearby growing community. The Union Congregational Church in Richmond Hill was built from stone taken from the quarry. A stone crusher owned by John Donaldsen stood at the other end of the Cemetery near 135th Street.
