Kitty Genovese
Revisions to Article 1

August 17, 2008
Added "Frequently Asked Questions" to the right hand side bar.

August 25, 2007
Added an excerpt of a recent article of a similar crime in which the failure of witnesses to accurately report what was happening delayed police response.

September 3, 2006
Revised the graphic design and corrected some typographical errors. No substantive changes made.

May 13, 2006
Added a Kitty Genovese Message Board where all messages about her case will be posted. Such messages will no longer appear in the Guestbook.

May 8, 2006
Thanks to Jonathan Bloomfield for a photograph of Kitty's grave which has been added to page 2.

January 15, 2006
Added quote to the beginning of the Postscript.

January 1, 2006
Revised the graphic design and corrected some typographical errors. No substantive changes made.

December 27, 2005
On the second page, at the beginning of the Postscript, added an admittedly poor quality image of Kitty at a bar - possibly the one she worked at.

December 25, 2005
At the top of the first page, under the illustration, have added biographical information about Kitty including a link to a present day photograph of the address where she was employed at the time of her death.

December 3, 2005
At the top of the first page, have added a link to the New York State Department of Correctional Services web page about Winston Moseley, along with information about Moseley's upcoming parole hearing.

July 9, 2005
The following have been added to this article:
  • A black and white illustration of Kitty done by 14 year old twins Alexandra and Rebecca Chipkin of Kew Gardens, NY.

  • A 44 sec. MP3 clip of the Phil Ochs song, "Outside of Small Circle of Friends" which was inspired by press accounts of Kitty's murder. The red print link is on page 2 of the main text, right after footnote 108.

  • An offsite link to a synopsis and review of "The Whimper of Whipped Dogs", a short story by Harlan Ellison based on news accounts of Kitty's murder. The red print link is on page 2 of the main text, right after footnote 107.

April 15, 2005
At the end of the fifth to last paragraph on page 2, added a link to a university web page. The message on that page was written in-house. It was not written to me.

December 17, 2004
I have added a reference to the 1984 murder of Barbara Miller Purvis in Brooklyn, NY in which initial reports that no one had called police to report an ongoing attack turned out to be wrong. [See text preceding fn. 67.2.] I have also corrected some typos and made a few stylistic changes to my comments.

September 6, 2004
I have updated this article to include information from three new sources:
  • Remarks by former Queens County Assistant District Attorney, Charles Skoller, delivered at the March 9, 2004 Kitty Genovese Forum held at Fordham University. Mr. Skoller identified a second witness, Joseph Fink, who saw the first stabbings of Kitty Genovese. Although other sources argued the existence of a second witness [see, e.g., Seedman & Hellman, Chief!, pp. 116 - 117 (Arthur Field Books, Inc. 1974)], Skoller's remarks now verify it. Skoller said he was one of the prosecuting attorneys and that he interviewed 20 to 25 witnesses in preparation for the trial of Kitty's killer, Winston Moseley.

  • Remarks by New York Times freelance writer, Jim Rasenberger, who spoke, with Charles Skoller, at the Kitty Genovese Forum.

  • A fortieth anniversary article about the case written by Jim Rasenberger and published in the February 8, 2003 New York Times.
